This is especially true in Montgomery County, where the local population is more diverse than ever before, with more than 138 languages spoken in Montgomery County’s public schools. Cultural Exchanges brings together the work of nine artists that refers to people, places, experiences and artistic traditions from across the globe. Some of these artists have lived and worked in Montgomery County their entire lives, while others have traveled here as children or adults, sometimes under duress. As a group, the work shares an abstract language that traverses cultural divides and probes themes of memory, loss, identity, and encounter."http://creativemoco.com/CulturalExchanges* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *Monday, February 3, 7:30pmCLAIRE LYNCH BANDIMT ConcertSaint Mark Presbyterian Church10701 Old Georgetown RdRockville, MDBy any measure, The Claire Lynch Band is high on the bluegrass world’s A-List, with musicians whose accolades include International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Female Vocalist of the Year and two Grammy nominations for Best Bluegrass Album (Claire); two IBMA Bass Player of the Year awards (Mark Schatz); MerleFest Doc Watson Guitar Champion (Matt Wingate); and an unprecedented first-place win in three instrument categories at the Walnut Valley National Flatpicking Championship. Claire's musical direction dates back to the days of the Front Porch String Band, resulting in a seasoned sound that is simultaneously unpretentious and richly textured. It's a down-home, front porch sensibility--until you realize that it's a rare front porch, indeed, that has ever hosted musicians of this caliber. The band is grounded by bassist Mark Schatz's deft touch and masterful instinct for groove. And Matt Wingate is a remarkably soulful young gun whose mature improvisational musicality is seemingly far beyond his years, making him instantly at home in one of the greatest bluegrass bands currently on the scene. Dolly Parton credits Claire with “one of the sweetest, purest and best lead voices in the music business today.” Claire’s harmonies have graced the recordings of many stellar musicians, from Ralph Stanley to Linda Ronstadt. Equally gifted as a songwriter, her songs have been recorded by The Seldom Scene, Patty Loveless, Kathy Mattea, The Cherryholmes, The Whites and others.Tickets $18 advance, $20 door. On the contrary, historians have traced the Underground Railroad up myriad rivers and streams throughout Bay Country where countless runaways sought a route to the north to escape bondage in the South. Galesville, with its history of Quakerism, could easily have served as a terminal for such an exodus. To celebrate this often shrouded past, the acclaimed folk duo Magpie (Greg Artzner and Terry Leonino) will perform songs from the antebellum era, both from the abolition movement and the Underground Railroad, when they perform at the Galesville Memorial Hall on Saturday, February 15. Mixed in to their repertoire will be contemporary songs, many of their own composition, which tell some of the unknown stories of that era and connect them directly with songs from the great freedom struggle in America that culminated in the modern Civil Rights movement. From Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass to John Brown and Dangerfield Newby, the heroes and heroines of the fight for freedom come to life in songs that reflect the compelling struggles and hardships in the quest for emancipation.Terry Leonino and Greg Artzner have been singing together professionally for over 40 years and have traveled the length and breadth of North America, Canada and Mexico and have toured abroad. They celebrated their 40th anniversary this past October in a sold-out concert at the Barns of Wolf Trap. They are well-known for raising their voices in support of many diverse political, peace action, environmental and social justice causes. They are also highly respected experts in the field of music and history, presenting programs in schools, museums (including the Smithsonian Institution) and in professional development workshops for history educators on topics ranging from the labor movement to the Underground Railroad to the Great Depression and more.Tickets: $15 in advance, $20 at the door.Refreshments, wine and beer will be available for sale.Proceeds benefit the West River Improvement Association. For more information or reservations, call 443-786-0463 or e-mail janiemeneely@gmail.com.* * * * *Tuesday, February 18, 7:00pmOPEN MIC / BLUES JAMHosted by Dave Rothman (Country & Rock welcome too)El Golfo Restaurant8739 Flower Ave.Silver Spring, MD
