An Open Mic with Comedy, Music, Poetry and more!
Busboys & Poets
235 Carroll St. NW DC
(a block from Takoma metro)
At a first-of-its-kind DC Science Café event, local performers moved by the scientific narrative of our times will share their songs, poetry, rap, comedy and other favored forms of expression in an on-stage demonstration of just how well art and science go together. After a series of short, featured performances, the mic will be open to members of the audience who have come prepared with their own science-themed pieces to share.  A rap about stem cells, a song about drones and power and love, a poem about cosmology in the voice of Tony Soprano, and a couple of professional science comedians, including the new DCSWA president!

THE ARTS SALON
Betty Mae Kramer Gallery and Music Room
Silver Spring Civic Building
One Veterans Plaza
Silver Spring, MD 20910
This month’s theme is “Thread.”
Artists of all disciplines are invited to share their art, their thoughts about the theme of thread. What does it mean to stitch something together? What are the threads that bind or weave through your work? Do you use actual or metaphoric thread in your art? Do you have a poem or song or play that relates to the topic? Fiber artists, costume designers, poets, songwriters, photographers, filmmakers, tailors, and surgeons welcome!
Format: The salon will feature a performance-oriented show-and-tell format, a kind of "open mic" for artists of all disciplines based around a theme. Participants are encouraged to prepare a five-minute piece to share: a new song, the unveiling of a new painting, a scene to read from a play-in-progress, etc. After the performances, what follows is discussion and engagement.
Host: The host is award-winning author and songwriter Mary Amato (www.maryamato.com). The program manager is visual artist Cynthia Farrell Johnson (www.cfjfinearts.com).
The salon is presented by Silver Spring Town Center, Inc (SSTCi) with the support of the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County.
Light Refreshments: Will be provided.
RSVP:  amato_ink@yahoo.com or visit our Facebook Event Page
FREE and open to the public.

SHAKESPEARE: THE TEMP(EST)
presented by Lumina Studio Theatre
Black Box Theatre
8641 Colesville Rd.
Silver Spring, MD 20910
Imagine a dystopian world far, far in the future: the Polar Regions have melted, earth's seas have risen, and the coastlines are threatened. The WallGard Company, an alliance of government, corporate, and religious extremists - supervises a colossal Wall that stands between humans and the toxic waters that could potentially wipe out the human race.  Imagination has stagnated and the society has been divided into the workers who must maintain the Wall and their masters. But some workers who have been infected are beginning to see visions of another world, and other possibilities of freedom.  Enter the Temp who will begin a new way of seeing, a revolution for humankind.  Lumina’s THE TEMP(est) is a spirited  and timely - adaptation of Shakespeare’s last great masterpiece which  shows us the value of creativity in a world of worker struggles and the ecological challenges. As a breach in the Wall threatens the very existence of humanity, the vision of Prospera’s magic, Ariel’s energy, and the young lovers’ optimism points the way to a brave new world.

Based on the core principles and tools of the Dance Exchange, the Teen Leadership Institute brings together young people ages 14-19 to collaboratively build their leadership capacity through artmaking. Using dance, song, poetry, and storytelling to transform ideas into action, we will explore the role of art in building community and creating sustainable change. Teens will work with professional artists and community organizers in our studios in Takoma Park and out in our communities to expand their skills through conversations, workshops, and practice. This institute will focus on challenges LGBT youth face, and we welcome all teens regardless of orientation, with and without dance experience.

BELLY DANCE CLASSES IN TAKOMA PARK
Saffron Dance at Takoma Park
In Residence at Roda Movements
7014 Westmoreland Ave
Takoma Park, MD 20912
What do a N.A.S.A. engineer, corporate lawyer, stay-at-home-mom and your local barista all have in common? They spend their evenings at Saffron Dance learning something you might not expect: Belly Dance. If you haven’t belly danced before, now is the perfect time to begin. To mark Saffron Dance’s 8th year as a hub for Middle Eastern dance, Saffron is offering FREE introductory “teaser” classes from September 15th to September 28th. These teaser classes give students a taste of Saffron’s signature 4-week Belly Dance Crash Course program. Created for individuals who are coming to belly dance for the very first time, Saffron’s Crash Courses are structured and easy to follow — absolutely no dance experience necessary! They are perfect for students to learn the basics of Belly Dance. Each week, a new movement is introduced and drilled, building on and incorporating elements from the prior weeks. Particular focus is given to developing correct posture alignment, flexibility, arm positions and paths, fundamental shimmies, basic hip accents, introductory undulations, easy to follow traveling steps and combinations. The program culminates in a performance opportunity so students can share their new hobby with family and friends.
Learn more about Saffron Dance and sign up for 4-Week Crash Courses starting September 29 at www.SAFFRONDANCE.com
