ARTS HAPPENINGS IN SILVER SPRING/TAKOMA PARK

Wednesday, April 15, 6:30pm
MARY AMATO -- SSTCi Arts Salon
Silver Spring Civic Building
Betty Mae Kramer Gallery and Music Room
One Veterans Plaza
Silver Spring, MD
The host is award-winning author and songwriter Mary Amato (www.maryamato.com). The program manager is Cynthia Farrell Johnson (www.cfjfinearts.com), a local visual artist.
THEME: Improvisation
Come and share your art and or your thoughts about the theme of "improvisation." Do you use improve in your creative process? Do you embrace/avoid it? Are you afraid of it or are you energized by it? April is Jazz Appreciation Month and National Poetry Month. Come and celebrate both. Free giveaway of a jazz-inspired t-shirt designed by our own Cynthia Farrell Johnson--no purchase necessary, but you must be present to win. Join us!
Who: Fine artists, filmmakers, writers, musicians, photographers, graphic designers, playwrights, poets, and anyone interested in the creative process.
Format: The salon will feature a performance-oriented show-and-tell format, a kind of “open mic” for artists of all disciplines based around a theme. Participants are encouraged to prepare a five-minute piece to share: a new song, the unveiling of a new painting, a scene to read from a play-in-progress, etc. After the performances, what follows is discussion and engagement.
FREE and open to the public.
Light Refreshments will be provided.
Sponsors: The salon is sponsored and presented by The Silver Spring Town Center, Inc (SSTCi) with the support of the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County (AHCMC). AHCMC is an independent nonprofit serving as Montgomery County’s designated local arts agency.

KARIM NAGI: ARAB IDENTITY AND THE ARTS--DIASPORA AND OUTREACH
Cultural Arts Center: Montgomery College Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus
Theater 2
7995 Georgia Avenue
Silver Spring, MD 20910
Musician, performer and orator Karim Nagi presents how Arabs can be misunderstood in the USA, and how the arts can help familiarize people with the culture. Nagi explains the different ways Arabs identify themselves within the USA, based on national, religious, or personal associations. He further illustrates how these versions may confuse or alienate the general public, especially when coupled with media portrayal of current events. Through this interactive and performance-based lecture, Nagi demonstrates examples of Arab music and dance that he uses in public school assemblies, master classes and concerts to educate and enthrall non-Arab audiences in the USA and abroad. His approach of using the Arts as Outreach, will be experienced first-hand.

DAN “DADDY SQUEEZE” NEWTON & COOKING WITH GAS TRIO w/ Takoma Dave Rothman
VFW Post 35
Takoma Park, MD
Don’t miss one of the best and most unusual accordion (that's right, accordion) players in the country, Dan "Daddy Squeeze" Newton. Dan "Daddy Squeeze" Newton has been playing offbeat accordion music since 1987, when he won the Nebraska State Accordion Contest at the Czech Festival in Wilber, Nebraska. He has used the squeeze box for playing all kinds of music not normally associated with free-reed instruments, as well as standard accordion material. Daddy Squeeze also enjoys mixing up styles and genres that don't generally seem compatible. "Music out of context", or "Ethno-clectic Bop" is the result of his gender-bending experiments with Celtic, Tex-Mex, Creole, Blues, Jazz, Scandinavian, Polka and pop music.
http://www.daddysqueeze.com/bands_solo.html
Opening for Daddy Squeeze with be the Cooking With Gas Trio featuring "Takoma Dave" Rothman (vocals & harmonica), Roy Brooks (guitar) and James "Cookie" Cooke that bring you finger-snapping, toe-tapping, head-bopping blues, swing and jazz and maybe a little country.
Donations of $10 are encouraged from patrons to support live music.

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF
Montgomery Blair High School
51 University Blvd.
Silver Spring, MD 20901
Fiddler on the Roof turns 50 this year and returns to the Blair stage after almost 20 years. Based on the classic tales of Sholem Aleichem, it is the story of Tevye, a poor milkman, his wife Golde, their five daughters, and their swiftly-changing corner of the world. In the waning years of tsarist Russia, with revolution in the air, can Tevye and his family hold on to their ancient ways and still embrace new ones. When creators Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick were wrestling with a strong opening number for their fledgling show, director/choreographer Jerome Robbins asked, “What’s it about?” The pair thought a moment, then replied, “Tradition.” That gave shape to this classic of the American stage, and audiences for half a century have shown their deep love for this timeless and universal story. Full of love, humor, pathos, change, and (of course) tradition, Fiddler on the Roof is a winner of a show for the whole family.
Tickets available at the door or at www.mbhs-fiddler.brownpapertickets.com
Adults $10 • Students/Seniors $7
It’s a “Tradition” for the Blair community to help those in need.
Please bring canned goods to donate to the Capital Area Food Bank.

What do a N.A.S.A. engineer, corporate lawyer, stay-at-home-mom and your local barista all have in common? They spend their evenings at Saffron Dance learning something you might not expect: Belly Dance. If you haven’t belly danced before, now is the perfect time to begin. To mark Saffron Dance’s 8th year as a hub for Middle Eastern dance, Saffron is offering FREE introductory “teaser” classes from September 15th to September 28th. These teaser classes give students a taste of Saffron’s signature 4-week Belly Dance Crash Course program. Created for individuals who are coming to belly dance for the very first time, Saffron’s Crash Courses are structured and easy to follow — absolutely no dance experience necessary! They are perfect for students to learn the basics of Belly Dance. Each week, a new movement is introduced and drilled, building on and incorporating elements from the prior weeks. Particular focus is given to developing correct posture alignment, flexibility, arm positions and paths, fundamental shimmies, basic hip accents, introductory undulations, easy to follow traveling steps and combinations. The program culminates in a performance opportunity so students can share their new hobby with family and friends.
Learn more about Saffron Dance and sign up for 4-Week Crash Courses starting September 29 at www.SAFFRONDANCE.com

The SLIGO CREEK HEDGE SCHOOL - An Irish Music and Culture Camp for Youth
Since 1998, the Sligo Creek Hedge School has been dedicated to helping youth experience the joy of Irish music, poetry and culture.  Learning Irish traditional music is the heart of the Sligo Creek Hedge School - singing, pennywhistle, bodhran (the Irish drum), even harp and accordion!   But we do much more –  a daily Tea & Poetry Time, Celtic crafts, lunches at Sligo Creek (perfect for wading), and field trips.  We might visit a local instrument builder, stroll with Irish wolfhounds, try the Uilleann (rhymes with "willin") bagpipes, and much more.  Our days are filled with fun!
For more details and to register visit the website:
Karen Ashbrook, Director Sligo Creek Hedge School

NOTE: Register by March 17 and receive a free pennywhistle lesson!
