ROOTS AND RHYTHM: Footworks’ Summer Camp
Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts
Annapolis, MD
"Roots and Rhythm" will include fun and easy dances from different cultures and explore
world music through singing, ensemble drumming, visual arts, and creative improv activities.
All material is designed to be accessible and fun and is broken down to basics and taught with
care and patience to any level of experience. The camp explores the diversity and commonality
of the people of the United States.  Songs and dances and their histories from different cultures
are taught in a fun and inviting way, bringing students together in rhythms and songs that
build community and connect participants to each other and to their shared American heritage.
The last day of camp will include a pizza party for lunch and later a culminating event called
a “Sharing” that will be open to family and friends. The “Sharing” is not designed as a
performance, but is a fun and informal presentation that will give the campers the opportunity
to demonstrate what they have learned and created together.

Celebrating 37 years as a professional music and dance company that tours internationally,
Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble brings a wealth of experience to the creation of
summer camps. Footworks is thrilled to receive funding support from the Arts Council of
Anne Arundel County to present this summer camp at Maryland Hall. Youth programs
from Footworks are renowned for creating inspiring, non-competitive and inclusive
environments for all campers. “Roots and Rhythm’s” staff will include Founding Director
and Certified Teaching Artist Eileen Carson and Musical Director Mark Schatz, both of whom
have received Maryland State Arts Council’s Individual Artist Awards and “Annie” Awards
from the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County.  Footworks’ rehearsal captain, Marsha Searle,
also with years of experience teaching youth, will be on staff along with “Annie” Award
winner Elizabeth Melvin, Director of the Freedom Choir, bringing her fun and accessible
approach to teaching ensemble drumming and singing.

BELLY DANCE CLASSES IN TAKOMA PARK
Saffron Dance at Takoma Park
In Residence at Roda Movements
7014 Westmoreland Ave
Takoma Park, MD 20912
What do a N.A.S.A. engineer, corporate lawyer, stay-at-home-mom and your local barista all have in common? They spend their evenings at Saffron Dance learning something you might not expect: Belly Dance. If you haven’t belly danced before, now is the perfect time to begin. To mark Saffron Dance’s 8th year as a hub for Middle Eastern dance, Saffron is offering FREE introductory “teaser” classes from September 15th to September 28th. These teaser classes give students a taste of Saffron’s signature 4-week Belly Dance Crash Course program. Created for individuals who are coming to belly dance for the very first time, Saffron’s Crash Courses are structured and easy to follow — absolutely no dance experience necessary! They are perfect for students to learn the basics of Belly Dance. Each week, a new movement is introduced and drilled, building on and incorporating elements from the prior weeks. Particular focus is given to developing correct posture alignment, flexibility, arm positions and paths, fundamental shimmies, basic hip accents, introductory undulations, easy to follow traveling steps and combinations. The program culminates in a performance opportunity so students can share their new hobby with family and friends.
Learn more about Saffron Dance and sign up for 4-Week Crash Courses starting September 29 at www.SAFFRONDANCE.com
