CARPE DIEM WOMEN’S SONG CIRCLE & WORKSHOP (rescheduled from Jan 28)
Private home in Silver Spring, MD 20910
(address provided with RSVP)
Song Leader: Oma Pearl
Oma Pearl is a vocalist and songwriter who was born in Chicago and raised in Florida. Blues and jazz were always playing in her household, and from a young age, she began to listen to Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith. After studying at Howard University in Washington DC, Oma became a school teacher. She moved around the South, from Atlanta to Charlotte, and found herself back in DC. After forming a jazz trio in 2009, she found that her true love was an even older musical tradition. Oma started to teach herself ukulele in 2010 after discovering that one of her favorite blueswomen, Geeshie Wiley, also played. In 2013, Oma formed a band called "Conjure Woman" which focused on old-time blues, folk, ring shouts and work songs of the African American tradition. She performs both solo and with a band whenever possible. Oma's goal is to educate people about the roots of American music, especially from a woman's perspective.

This Gypsy Jazz ensemble draws inspiration for its original music from legendary Manouche guitarist Django Reinhardt. The group is an acoustic powerhouse of two guitars and upright bass. Sami Arefin and Michael Joseph Harris trade dazzling leads and harmonize together on rich gypsy-inspired melodies. The dynamic Eddie Hrybyk on upright bass holds down the steady swinging pulse and brings his passion for improvisation to the group.
